The guardian of the Hall of Virtue is Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Born as Nepalese prince Siddhartha Gautama, he relinquished his royal luxuries to pursue a spiritual path free from the tribulations of life. He eventually attained enlightenment and became the revered figure known as Gautama Buddha.

He’s immortalised as a monument at the heart of the memorial hall, so his teachings are never far from any soul entrusted to his care. Among his most famous teachings is the Noble Eightfold Path, a set of principles designed to instil ethical conduct, mental discipline and wisdom - all virtues key to attaining enlightenment.

These virtues are manifested as the spokes of 7. The Dharma Wheel, which is part of a sacred set of Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism. The other symbols are:

1. The Precious Parasol
Signifying protection from obstacles and other harmful forces

2. The Treasure Vase
Signifying a vast appetite for spiritual knowledge and longevity

3. The Knot of Eternity
Signifying the intertwining of wisdom and compassion

4. The Victory Banner
Signifying the triumph of Gautama Buddha’s teachings

5. The White Conch Shell
Signifying the far-reaching impact of Gautama Buddha’s teachings

6. The Two Golden Fish
Signifying freedom from suffering

8. The Lotus Flower
Signifying purity and enlightenment

Collectively known as the Ashtamangala, they were bestowed on Gautama Buddha upon his enlightenment. This scene inspires the design of the pedestal his monument stands on, with the Ashtamangala amplifying his divinity.

The facade of each niche also pays homage to this landmark event, enshrining Gautama Buddha in a pitch-perfect concentric display. Its rims are embossed with rhinestones that shimmer like celestial stars and an intricate patternwork of clouds.

Inside, he’s depicted in meditation with his 佛光 or Buddha Light, a fiery mandala that nearly envelops him. Every detail - from the dancing edges of the flames to the streams on his robe - is brought to life with pinpoint precision to reflect his stature.
