The Hall of Enchantment is a poetic rendering of the celestial realm of Sukhavati (the Western Pure Land), echoing both its air of serenity and surrealism. Described by Buddhist scriptures as a haven for souls pursuing enlightenment, Sukhavati is often depicted with some of the most wondrous sights across all realms.
These include gleaming terraces that soar like mountains, trees stretching with canopies of jewels and boundless ponds thriving with abundant lotus flowers - all caressed by a radiant sun that never sets.
Amidst a purposefully open-concept memorial hall that serves as a peaceful sanctuary for the departed, their celestial qualities are brought to life through the suspended ceiling. It’s adorned with otherworldly shaped cutaways that reveal pools of shimmering mosaic tiles. Towering chandeliers emerge from them to cast their brilliance on the memorial hall.
More thoughtful design choices abound on the facade of each niche, where Amitābha Buddha’s visage is pictured in a state of meditation and showcased alongside a lotus flower emblem. Amitābha Buddha, for his part, is the principal Buddha of Sukhavati, while a lotus flower signifies purity and enlightenment.
